We’ve been in our Virginia home for just under a month now, and we’re already in full swing. Like most big transitions, it’s been a mix of progress, problem-solving, and learning as we go.

One thing we’re actively looking into is the square footage discrepancy on our new build. This is something we discovered after moving in, and while we don’t have firm answers yet, we’re exploring what options may exist and what that process realistically looks like post-closing. I’ll share more once we have clearer direction—but I wanted to be transparent that this is part of the journey, too.

Vehicle Shipping: Final Leg Complete!

On the logistics side, we officially wrapped up the tail end of privately shipping our vehicles overseas. Once both vehicles reached the port at BWI, everything on that side was handled smoothly.

Because we had just gotten settled into the house—and with BWI being about a four-hour drive each way—we decided to bite the bullet and have the vehicles transported to us instead of doing pickup ourselves.
• Transport cost: $990 (for debit) or $1,029 (card payment)
• The driver contacted us directly, provided a delivery window, and kept me updated the entire time
• Unloading went smoothly, though the BMW took a little extra time given how low it sits.

Overall, it was one of those “pay for convenience” moments, and for us, it was worth it.

For anyone bringing a vehicle in from overseas, I’ll also be walking through the DMV and registration process once we’ve fully wrapped it up—my goal is to cover every scenario so you know what to expect.

Home Projects Already Underway 🏡

On the home front, we didn’t waste any time getting started:

• Added more gravel to extend the driveway and create a camper pad
• Installed closet wiring for better organization
• Started adding attic boards so we can actually use that storage space

Once the attic project is finished, I’ll share costs, materials, and how we worked around wiring and ducts, because that’s one of those upgrades that sounds simple—but isn’t always.

For those curious about numbers: we ordered 13 tons of #57 blue gravel, which came in at around $800 total, including delivery and tax.

One big plus: Virginia requires a 1-year builder’s warranty, which functions similarly to a home warranty but is far more comprehensive—and there’s no call-out fee. We’ve already used it for HVAC and some electrical items, and so far it’s been a huge relief while settling in.

Across the Pond

On another note, this is the slower season for rentals with the holidays—but our England home may be getting a new tenant soon. We’re just waiting to confirm a few final details, and we’re cautiously optimistic.

Emotionally, this chapter has been bittersweet. We’re off to a strong start here—our kids are in school, routines are forming, and we’re settling back into life in the States. At the same time, there’s a part of us that genuinely misses England and the life we built there. Both things can be true.
